Get Ready for Digital Product Passport with PIM
The EU has just enacted new legislation that significantly impacts anyone dealing with physical products. Soon, all products in various categories such as clothing, consumer electronics, and batteries will need to have a product passport containing all essential information about the product's production, disposal, and environmental impact. The passport will be stored in a QR code, NFC chip, or something else, but all products will need to have it.
Why Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
The main idea behind the DPP is that the EU aims to transition to a fully circular economy. Garbage must be abolished. Instead, everything should be reusable or recyclable. This will only be possible with sufficient documentation and data, ensuring that all materials are treated in the best possible way throughout their lifecycle. Initially, the DPP will be linked to the product groups with the largest climate footprint and the most potential for recycling.
Are You Already Falling Behind?
The legislation has technically already come into effect, but the specifications for the Digital Product Passport are not yet clear. This means it is not yet evident what exactly a DPP must contain or how the technical solution should be designed. However, the EU expects the details to be finalized by the end of 2026, so there is not much time before these significant changes take effect.
How to Prepare for DPP?
Sooner or later, the DPP requirements will affect you. The plan is for the requirements to be rolled out to cover many more types of products than those initially mentioned. The best thing you can do now is to get complete control of your product data and data suppliers, as this is an essential prerequisite for succeeding with your DPP.
PIM System and DPP
The PIM system is your most crucial system for managing large amounts of product data. It can also be your most important tool when the DPP is fully implemented. It is the best place to both store and distribute product data. This means that regardless of which stakeholder and which system you need to send data to, it will always be possible from your PIM.
